16x20 inch Black & White print on Epson Art Cotton Smooth 250 gram paper. From the NYC Village Halloween Parade, 1982–86.
In the heart of the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade during the mid-1980s, this evocative black-and-white photograph captures the raw, kinetic energy of New York City's most storied October tradition. Shot on classic Kodak Tri-X film, the image reveals a crowd of revelers transformed into monsters and ghouls, with a striking Frankenstein mask dominating the foreground. The use of a Norman 200B flash creates a stark, high-contrast aesthetic, pulling the grotesque details of the costumes out of the night's shadows and illuminating the joyful intensity of the spectators. Every grain of the 35mm Pentax frame tells a story of urban folklore, freezing a moment of collective celebration where the lines between the mundane and the macabre completely blur.
