16x20 inch Black & White print on Epson Art Cotton Smooth 250 gram paper. From the NYC Village Halloween Parade, 1982–86.
This black-and-white photograph, captured on Kodak Tri-X film with a 35mm Pentax, immortalizes the eccentric spirit of the NYC Village Halloween Parade during the mid-1980s. Bathed in the stark, high-contrast light of a Norman 200B strobe, two celebrators tilt their heads back in a spirited moment of howling at the moon, their makeshift costumes adding a layer of surrealist charm to the night. To their right, a third participant stands in captivating contrast, clad in a patterned robe and a textured headmask, staring directly into the camera lens with a piercing gaze. The grain of the film enhances the raw, documentary feel of the scene, freezing a spontaneous instance of urban theatrical self-expression in the heart of Greenwich Village.
