New Liberty

Archival 16x20 inch black-and-white fine art print on Epson Art Cotton Smooth 250 gram paper. NYC Village Halloween Parade street photography, Greenwich Village, 1982–86.

A clever reveler wearing a Statue of Liberty crown peers through a complex lattice of white scaffolding — a witty nod to the landmark's mid-1980s restoration. The crisp, geometric lines of the costume stand out sharply against the dark, winding streets of the Village, illuminated by the powerful burst of a professional strobe. Captured on Kodak Tri-X film with a 35mm Pentax, the image preserves the gritty and inventive spirit of this legendary New York City celebration, before the parade route moved to the wider expanse of the main avenues.
