Beside them, a smiling fan in a New York Rangers jersey raises a hockey stick high — a perfect example of the spontaneous, DIY energy that defined the event as it grew into a massive neighborhood institution. Shot on Tri-X film with a 35mm Pentax, the image captures a dense background of onlookers, documenting a pivotal era in the parade's rise as a legendary Greenwich Village spectacle.
