Mr. Pumpkin

Archival 16x20 inch black-and-white fine art print on Epson Art Cotton Smooth 250 gram paper. NYC Village Halloween Parade street photography, Greenwich Village, 1982–86.

A reveler wearing an enormous, grinning pumpkin mask and a thick terry-cloth bathrobe looms over the crowd, his disproportionately large hands gripping the hand of a companion. This surreal moment was captured in the heart of Greenwich Village during the annual Halloween Parade in the mid-1980s. Shot on high-speed Kodak Tri-X film with a 35mm camera and illuminated by a powerful professional strobe, the image freezes the costumed pair against the dark New York City streets — highlighting the creative and slightly uncanny spirit that defined this era of the historic neighborhood celebration.
