Pee Wee

Archival 16x20 inch black-and-white fine art print on Epson Art Cotton Smooth 250 gram paper. NYC Village Halloween Parade street photography, Greenwich Village, 1982–86.

A reveler dressed as the quirky Pee-wee Herman character participates in the Village Halloween Parade, their likeness captured in the evocative grain of black-and-white film. Taken with a 35mm Pentax between 1982 and 1986, the black-and-white scene is frozen by the sharp burst of a portable commercial flash, which illuminates the person's exaggerated expression and distinctive white-rimmed glasses. Clutching a large jack-o'-lantern balloon and a smaller one featuring a black cat, the subject stands out against the dark, crowded backdrop of the New York City night. The high-contrast lighting emphasizes the textures of the costume and the festive props, documenting a playful moment of pop-culture homage amidst the creative chaos of the Greenwich Village streets.
